Winter Makeup Trends 2015
The Autumn/Winter 2015-2016 season of Fashion Week events wrapped up earlier this year in New York, London, Paris and Milan. And like with every new season, we’re beginning to see the makeup trends from the runway shows turning up in everyday wear as Australia says hello to winter, and the designer makeup trends that come with it.
The big message from this Autumn/Winter season? Natural is well and truly back. Even, luminous complexions; pure, crystalline lips; and nude, naked eyes were big with every designer. Think barely-there makeup, glowing skin, and embracing your natural beauty. Less is more!
And for a stand-out statement on those special nights out, we saw plenty of bold, dramatic eyes and deep, dark lips. Highlight your favourite features while keeping your foundation light, for an intriguing take on classic smoky eyes and statement lips.
Here are the top winter makeup trends straight from the runways of Fashion Week, and how to recreate them at home!
#1: Au Natural
If there’s any time to learn how to apply minimal makeup for a completely fresh and natural look, it’s definitely now! As the weather gets colder, one thing you really don’t want to be doing is standing in your cold tiled bathroom for too long getting your intricate makeup applied just right.
Models this season were fresh-faced and natural, with clean skin, nude and slightly glossy lips, and naked eyes. Our top tip: Get a good quality eyelash curler and don’t go too crazy with the mascara.

#2: Shades of Blush and Orange
The biggest eyeshadow trends this season were light, washed-out shades of apricot, mandarin and coral. Especially popular with the likes of Alexander McQueen, Bottega Veneta and Stella McCartney, this shade really brings out the colour of your eyes and gives a warm, sunny feel to your whole winter look.
When recreating this look at home, the eyeshadow should be simple and clean, either blended all around the eye area or brushed over the lid for a fresh and feminine glow. Depending on the look you’re after, use it with coat of mascara and a touch of eyeliner to really make your eyes pop, or go soft and bare by using just an eyelash curler and keeping your lips nude to match.
#3: A Dewy, Luminous Glow
Show off a healthy glow with radiant, dewy skin. This was a big look on the runway this season, especially with Emporio Armani, Paul Smith and Nina Ricci who had their models’ features highlighted with a light tint of gloss on their lips, eyelids and eyebrows. Balmain models had a touch of shine applied to the lids, nose and cheekbones for a whimsical and slightly flushed look that was both ultra-feminine and somewhat untamed.
This look radiates confidence, giving a fresh and healthy after-summer glow to your complexion which is a perfect pick-me-up for those dark winter days. Just remember to keep your foundation light, or the gloss will feel too dense and shiny.

#4: The Boldest of Lips
Even though it was the natural, barely-there makeup looks that conquered the runways this season, bolder and more dramatic statement looks were also given their fair share of the spotlight. Dark, moody pouts in shades of plum, Bordeaux and black replaced the more conventional colours and were seen on everyone from Marchesa and Marc Jacobs to Bottega Veneta and Ungaro.
These lusciously powerful lip colours were used in both matte and shimmering shades, paired with long dark lashes and a bare face. Remember, it takes confidence and poise to pull off these look-at-me lips, so the most important thing is to choose your colour and wear it with pride.
#5: Sultry, Smoky Eyes
The classic smoky eye will never go out of fashion. Eye makeup this season ranged from subtle and sophisticated to dark and grungy, in shades of black, brown and grey. The sultry, feline look made a big appearance on the Diane von Furstenberg and Chanel runway shows, paired with a light base and nude lip for maximum effect.
Whether you’re going for bold, intense lines or you prefer a light, wispy brush of colour, the smoky eye is a must-have look this winter season. Just remember not to go overboard with your lip colour at the same time, or there’ll be far too much going on! Your eyes should tell the story here.
