The Fine Art of DIY Hair Removal

With summer approaching, we’re once again being faced with one of the biggest beauty aggravations: getting rid of all that unwanted body hair! These days there are so many hair removal methods and techniques to choose from that it now goes far beyond the simple, trusty razor. And while most people have their tried and true approach, you may be surprised to find out that different methods actually work better on different areas and hair types.

Find out the pros and cons of a variety of different at-home hair removal techniques so that you can choose the right one for you, and get beautifully beach-ready this summer with super-smooth, soft and silky skin!

#1: Shaving

Hair Removal Tips

Most people made their first foray into hair removal with a razor, and while some people love the speed and convenience of shaving, others don’t always get the end result they’d like. It cuts the hair off at the skin’s surface and can give a very smooth, close shave, but if you have dark or thick hair then you will probably still see the hair roots.

PROS: It’s super-fast, convenient and inexpensive. It’s also the most painless hair removal method, but if you cut yourself it WILL hurt and it WILL bleed! So pay attention to what you’re doing and make sure you use a sharp blade and a shaving cream, lotion or oil to avoid painful nicks.

CONS: Shaving will only keep you smooth for a couple of days at best because it just cuts off the surface of the hair. Regrowth is much faster than with other hair removal methods, and the blunt ends created by the razor can aggravate stubble so shaving is not recommended for your face or bikini area.

THE BOTTOM LINE: If you’re looking for quick and effective short-term hair removal then shaving will do the trick. But it works best if you have light, fine hair and be aware that the results won’t last more than a couple of days. So if you’re going on holiday and don’t want to have to waste time with a razor, consider something more long-term.

#2: Waxing

Hair Removal Tips

The age-old method of waxing is a favourite for many people, and can be used all over the body to remove unwanted hair relatively quickly and for a longer period of time. It works well for those with dark, coarse hair as well as finer hair because it pulls the hair out from the root, leaving no trace behind.

PROS: By removing each individual hair directly by the follicle, waxing will leave you smooth and hair-free for much longer – usually 2-6 weeks depending on your hair growth cycle and the texture of your hair. Waxing is also great for getting rid of hair from large areas of the body at once like your legs, arms and underarms.

CONS: Unfortunately there’s no way to get around the pain! Waxing rips out your hair from the root so pain is unavoidable, although for a lot of people it becomes easier to bear the more you keep waxing. You’ll also need to be aware of the potential for ingrown hairs and irritation, so consider introducing regular exfoliation into your beauty routine.

THE BOTTOM LINE: If you can handle a bit of pain, waxing will give you a good few weeks of smooth, hair-free skin without the need for touch-ups. Just remember to choose a good quality wax and after-care products, and if you have sensitive skin then you should test it on a small area first to make sure your skin doesn’t irritate.

#3: Epilating

Hair Removal Tips

These relatively new hair removal gadgets have a head of rotating tweezers that lift and remove hairs from the root, in a similar way to waxing. You can use epilators all over your body, including the more sensitive areas like your underarms, bikini area and face.

PROS: It’s a mess-free and fairly quick process, and gives really smooth results that can last up to 6 weeks depending on how fast your hair naturally grows. And unlike waxing where you need to wait until your hairs are a certain length to be able to pull them out effectively, epilators can be used on super-short hairs for whenever you want to feel smooth again.

CONS: Epilating can be one of the most painful methods of hair removal, because it doesn’t pull out hair as quickly as ripping off hot wax. But like with waxing, it will get easier the more you keep doing it. Your skin may also be prone to irritation and ingrown hairs, depending on its sensitivity, so make sure you exfoliate regularly and consider using pre-epilation wipes or creams to help treat the area.

THE BOTTOM LINE: If you’re prepared to feel some pain to achieve hair-free, smooth skin for longer, epilating is a great option for at-home hair removal. Many newer models now come with various attachments for different speeds, areas of your body including sensitive areas, and pain reduction, so shop around to find one that has the features you’re looking for.

#4: Depilatory Creams

Hair Removal Tips

These wonder creams are chemical-based and remove hair by breaking down the actual hair structure. They are applied to the area of unwanted hair and left for 5-10 minutes, resulting in your hair gently breaking away from your skin.

PROS: Depilatory creams are quick and simple to use and 100% pain-free, making them a great alternative for people who can’t tolerate the pain of waxing or epilating but want hair-free results that will last longer than shaving. You can generally expect hair to start showing again anywhere from a few days after, up to a week.

CONS: These creams are made up of a lot of strong chemicals, and you can tell by the smell! They’re very harsh on the nose, and if you have very sensitive skin you may also want to think twice about using something so full of chemicals. Try a patch test first, and make sure you always follow the instructions carefully because leaving it on for too long can damage and irritate your skin.

THE BOTTOM LINE: If you can stand the smell and aren’t afraid of a little chemical exposure, depilatory creams are a fast way to get rid of body hair without any pain and with reasonably good results. Just make sure you read the instructions first and be careful not to leave it on your skin for any longer than it says.
